Polar bears’ fur appears white or yellowish, but hairs are actually translucent. There are around 20,000-25,000 polar bears in the wild, and they’re classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
Climate change is the single greatest threat to polar bears, since polar bears are uniquely adapted to live on sea ice and are completely dependent on it.
We’re working with governments, industry and individuals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change; as well, we’re preventing or removing direct threats from Arctic industrial activity. We’re also helping to protect critical polar bear habitat – including important movement corridors and denning areas.
