Emperor penguin colony

Emperor penguins breed during the cold, dark winter, with temperatures around -50°C and winds up to 200 kilometres per hour. With their dense plumage and layer of blubber, emperor penguins have adapted to live in the freezing cold climate.

Because most colonies of emperor penguins breed on sea ice around Antarctica, they may be the only species of bird never to set foot on land in their entire lifetime.
